Woodwind Quintet (2005/2008)

Program Notes:

I wrote this Woodwind Quintet from its end to its beginning. This results in a work which explains itself as it unfolds.

The second movement is a somewhat free fantasy on a solemn and spiritual Jewish high-holiday melody; this melody doesn't fully appear until the end of the movement.

The first movement is based on a sonority from the second movement and is in modified passacaglia form. This means that it is based on a recurring sequence of chords, though this sequence gets somewhat convoluted towards the end of the movement.

The end of the movement itself contains the chord sequence in its simplest form. This work was commissioned by the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival.
